Where to use Your Moments to Save Coupons

This past Sunday was the Moments to Save insert from Pepsico loaded with some great coupons for high dollar amounts on several Pepsico Brand products. All of the coupons expire on 8/11/2012 with the exception of  the non-food coupons which expires on the 20th.

I want to use this one insert to show you one of the ways you can use the Peanut Butter List to save even more money by matching these coupons to the lowest possible price in town. The combined value of all of the coupons is over $25 but if you use them at the wrong store or the wrong time you will not save anything, and in some cases you’ll be spending more even with using the coupons.

I pulled the list of coupons from the Moments to Save site and then did a search for each item at peanutbutterlist.com to see which store had the lowest price. What I found is that you can stretch the $25 in coupons to be over worth more than $50 in savings by buying the items from the store with the lowest current sale price.

Here’s the summary of the items compared on PBL:

I found 12 out of the 16 items on PBL to compare

Total amounts for each store if you bought everything compared:

  • Kings: $74.14
  • Safeway $84.00
  • Albertsons $61.20

Savings of $22.80 if you bought everything at Albertsons

Savings of $27.68 by shopping at 2 or more stores ($4.88 more than Albertsons)

Keep reading after the details for other tips in using PBL to save money.

How else can you save with PBL?

A year membership to PBL costs as low as $52… using PBL would save you $22.80 on only Pepsico products this week. Then there’s the rest of your groceries, which may not have coupons but you can save just by buying the lowest prices on all of your groceries.

With the Moments to Save coupons you should be going to Albertsons anyway to get the best value, so do a quick browse of the PB Items category and see what other items are on sale at ALbertsons for less than King Soopers and Safeway?

  • PB Items is a category on PBL, clicking this category will give you a list of items at their best deal for the week.

Create a list of those PB items before you head to Albertsons and grab them while you’re there…

  • Dasani 24 pack water is $3.99 saving you $1.00
  • Star Wine Vinegar is $1.99 saving you $1.40
  • Bumble Bee Wild Alaskan Salmon 14.74oz is $2.99 saving you $1.50
  • Trix 14.8oz is $2.99 saving you $0.80
  • Gain Liquid Fabric Softener is $2.99 saving you $3.00
  • Just these few save an additional $7.70
  • and there’s many more…

We compare every item side by side so while you’re looking at Albertsons best deals you’ll also notice some great deals at Kings and Safeway. Add those to your printed list as well and stop by Kings or Safeway on the way home or on another day.

For example: Kings is having a great sale in the meat department… Most Oscar Mayer lunch meats are one a Mix and Match of Buy 4 and save $4.00. These items all Score 99 on PBL, which means that they’re at their lowest recorded price in history. Albertsons is not having a sale on these Oscar Mayer products, so if you bought them while you were at Albertsons then you would end up erasing your savings.

Osacar Mayer:

  1. Beef franks 16oz $2.49 wyb4 vs. Albertsons at $5.49… Save $3.00
  2. Chopped Ham or Bologna 16oz $1.99 wyb4 vs. Albetrsons at $4.69… Save $2.70
  3. Naturally Hardwood Smoked Bacon $3.49 wyb4 vs. Albertsons at $6.99… Save $3.50
  4. Carving Board Lunch Meats $2.49 wyb4 vs. Albertsons at $4.79… Save $2.30

There’s another $11.50 in savings to buy only those 4 items from Kings, or buy 4 of each and freeze some of the meat for later. These all Score’d 99 so we know they will probably not get lower than this price.

If you know you’re just running in to buy these few products it won’t take very long to run back to the meat department, grab the meat, then head to check out. It might take 10 minutes to get in and out of there… which means you just earned $1.15 for every minute you spent at Kings.

We could do the same for Safeway and grab some of their better deals but I think you get the idea here. Whether you shop at 2 or more stores to save more or only shop at your favorite store, by buying all of your groceries at their lowest price will save you tons of money on each trip all year long.

So I’ve listed 21 items from 2 different stores.

  • With Moments to Save: save $22.80 at Albertsons
  • Grab a few more items saving you another $7.70
  • Then take 10 minutes at Kings for the meat sale and save $11.50

You just bought a good amount of groceries and saved $42 in one shopping trip.

The PBL membership breaks down to $1.00 per week… so this week you would have earned yourself $41 just by using PBL. If you shop every week and save $41 on each trip you would save $2,132 throughout the course of the year on your groceries.

  • $2,132 – $52 membership = $2,080 earned by you when you buy your groceries at or near their lowest possible prices.

You still can shop at your favorite store or stores, you can still buy all of the things you and your family enjoy and you don’t even need to use coupons if you don’t want to (but it does help.) The only thing you need to change, is when you buy your items. If the price is high, don’t buy… simple as that. Wait for a week or a couple weeks and you will get it at a better price.

What would you do with an extra $2,000 (or more) per year?
